The Second Annual Rock ‘n Blues Jam for Kids will raise money for Plan Canada’s Because I am a Girl campaign to support the education of girls in the developing world. “This is an important cause to us,” says Kim Boydell, organizer and bassist for the host band Wizened Old Men. “We believe that basic education is a human right, but the benefits that come from educating the other half of the population are immeasurable.” More information on the Because I am a Girl campaign can be found at Plan Canada’s website www.plancanada.ca
The Rock ‘n Blues Jam will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010 starting at 3 p.m. at Boston Manor, 4460 Fairview St. (at Appleby Line) in Burlington ON (note, this is a 19+ venue). Every musician who comes out will get on stage. A full p.a. system with sound technician, amplifiers, drums, and keyboard will be provided. Musicians only need to bring their voices, guitars, harmonics, horns or other instruments and be prepared to play with some of the best. Full bands and individual musicians are welcome along with audience members who just want to hear some great music. Individual musicians will be paired with other musicians or they will be backed by Wizened Old Men.

Last year’s event was a howling success with over 60 musicians in 12 bands taking the stage and with more than 100 people coming out just to watch. “Nowhere can an audience hear such a great range of fantastic music in one venue,” said Boydell. Bands and musicians came from Niagara Falls, Toronto, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo, and all points in between to help raise over $1,000 for Plan Canada. This year there will be a minimum donation of $10 at the door with Plan Canada issuing receipts for any donation of $25 or more.
Wizened Old Men, a classic rock and roll band, is a staple of the music scene on regular rotation at clubs in Burlington, Mississauga, and Guelph. Along with bassist Kim Boydell, the band is made up of Marty Fairbairn lead vocals, Chris Walker rhythm guitar and vocals; Brad Bryant keyboard and vocals; John Quinn drums and vocals; and Phil Ronald, lead guitar. The band, formed in 2002, has a long history of supporting worthy causes. Typically they would play two charity fund-raisers a year, but the Rock ‘n Blues Jam is the first event they organized themselves. |
